I am 74 years old, retired, living near Seattle, WA. I come from a family of very talented people. I was married once and raised 3 sons who are the joys of my life so far, though I have one grand daughter who is sweet as can be. I worked in technology until I retired on full disability on April 1, 1999. I was born and raised in Indiana, but lived most of my adult life near St. Louis, MO. I have been writing poetry since January 2006. I love music from most genres, nature and of course my writing.

Daylight

Daylight

The sun comes up in the morning bringing sunlight

weaving

across

skies in Summer, making crows fly in delight

windbreaker

weather

brings chills to the spine, for true love to take a flight

Summer

heatwaves

bring on a sweat, on the beach is a highlight

Springtime

ventures

are for romance to fall in love in a spotlight

Autumn

causes

leaves to fall off the trees, especially at night

Winter

snowfall

makes streets slick enough to give a sleigh appetite

fortunes

become

tantalizing anytime there is a fight

practice

avoids

energy being lost as muscles are flowing

sunny

basking

is warm and gains a tan that is glowing

rainstorms

refresh

the ground, flowers and shrubs begin growing

Douglas

evergreens

grow taller, their lives seem to be all knowing

danger

evades

forests except for fires set by overgrowing

evil

events

can do harm when the weather is past zoning

flying

alone

in the sky high above will keep you roaming

dancing

with

a friend is complicated by romancing

dating

organizes

the evenings and keeps you from getting behind

leading

became

a pastime it filled the crevices of the mind

sunrise

opens

new horizons to what we are inclined

moonlight

fading

to the daylight is part of why we get resigned

heatwaves

return

the hot part of Summer as we get aligned

solar

value

is part of Summer when we sunbath as reclined

nightfall

blocking

the sun eases the heat, as we are well primed

agendas

making

us sweat are a part of summer to be ill-timed

brightness

causing

us to blink is one reason to more blinding

moon-rise

coming

at end of day is a sign of our binding

illusions

alert

us to subconscious yearning for finding

twilight

emits

vampires to become an awkward spellbinding

sunset

explodes

across the sky as we become inviting

nighttime

ending

the daytime is part of life’s mesmerizing

sunrise

overtakes

the night’s darkness, waking us and surprising

living

loving

the life of happiness while we are reclining.

Bitter Tears

Bitter Tears

When love once passed me by

it brought more than a sigh

bitter tears flowed in reply

words that I could not deny

anger at how things went awry

in retrospect why should I cry

love is free as a butterfly

once smitten freedom is a high

hanging on met with humble pie

I let go when I said goodbye

bitter tears once shed, now quite dry

my heart is free, my soul can fly

love goes where life enjoys good chi

bitter tears when it goes awry!

Dreams Beyond

Dreams Beyond

Dreams go with age and approaching the beyond

dying

along

the way in life is a place in a huge pond

dreaming

about

life is a hall paved with doubts as we grow fond

yearning

living

within our constraints we start to form a bond

learning

missing

out on chances to go forward, being spawned

lazing

about

while daydreaming cause you to correspond

joking

around

causes the talk to go around and you must respond

daydreams

driving

you crazy are there when you must guaranty bond

sleeping

rem-sleep

keeps your subconscious in a state of mastermind

aspirations

inspire

the subconscious to get behind the creative mind

fantasies

open

the dream world to horizons that seem aligned

yearnings

belong

in the dream world as part of what may be maligned

glory

horizons

are openings to new paths of what the mind has refined

passions

become

doorways to the future of what you hope will be kind

reverie

provokes

the notion of new memories to be defined

nightmares

harness

the dark side, that paths are never well designed

novel

apparitions

are nightmares out of time and space losing light

above

memories

are features of love that need be brought to delight

romance

becomes

more important than a near experience to highlight

transcending

reality

is important than dreams of love to spotlight

without

loving

words to embrace we would find only the moonlight

downstream

fishes

are teaming to find a true love to expedite

future

beginnings

have a place in the sequence that becomes water tight

illusions

invade

the dream world, delusions are never quite airtight

deluding

moments

have a place that never has a moment that gets behind

across

time-warps

are horizons of illusions of the well mind

exceeding

limits

of the mind are escapes of a peaceful blind

onward

upward

are open doors to the future that are refined

gazing

skyward

are horizons that open minds to what we find

outside

restraints

of the mind are features to which we are aligned

timelines

restrict

us to someone else’s plan as cosmic designed

spacial

features

control living spaces as they are entwined.

Cherry Trees

Cherry Trees

Japan understands the cherry trees worth

nurturing

nature

was normal in the Far East as childbirth

satisfying

taste-buds

is a matter of what you love, and your girth

flowers

occupy

the eyes, men should be full of beauty’s birth

creativity

belongs

to the strong of heart, trees are full of dearth

feasting

entreats

the taste buds, and it is a time for mirth

maintaining

stamina

takes time away from what must is set forth

eating

defeats

the appetite in ways that seem unworth

tasting

sampling

at the grocery store seems a sweet delight

popping

cherries

off the tree is sweet, leaves taste of hindsight

Auntie

watered

her cherry tree and offered her foresight

deathly

hallows

struck her down, no time left in line of sight

cherries

falling

to the ground being left in the limelight

facing

lingering

senses of cherries in the night highlight

making

cherry

pies is a sweet taste of evening moonlight

cobbler

smelling

up the house is like a tasty birthright.

Watermelon

Watermelon

Summers were hot and brought thoughts of cool watermelon

Jesse

Bryant

was my granddaddy back then, I was in rebellion

Carrie’s

cooking

was marvelous with bacon juice, I was in heaven

orchard

fruity

treats were to be had, green apples from Avalon

arbors

covered

with grapes were up front, like a ruling Magellan

digging

gardening

was common back then, wanting a nice cold muskmelon

nurturing

youngsters

was necessary to have plenty of fruit and melon

fighting

insects

taught us to enjoy more of what we could reckon

working

electric

wiring in coal mines, my granddaddy had daylight

family

importance

was primary, for my granddaddy his health in hindsight

coal-dust

invaded

my granddaddy’s lungs, but other health came to ignite

politics

offered

new horizons to reach around melons for delight

holiday

feasting

was sweeter than traveling to gain a new insight

fishing

hunting

were in the game of coming to an appetite

water

melons

gave us freedom to eat and find our way past our fright

eating

began

feeding our souls, giving us horizons in our light.

Patchwork Skies

Patchwork Skies

Blues and hues, skies in patchwork disguise

whites and grays, eyes watching the sun rise

tinges of pink, a new day to surmise

a patchwork lying before my eyes

unlike life where and when it all began

we fit together, catch as catch can

starting with a clean slate, having no plan

patching together life like Peter Pan

winds of change moving the pieces about

dark clouds holding waters of life to tout

blues come and go, clouds overlay doubt

happiness comes when patches will sprout

skies unsettled like folks’ minds in disarray

black is white, blue is gray, come another day

the world is seen more clearly as a feat of clay

patchwork skies sewn together, love sowing the way.

What it Was, Was Football

What it Was, Was Football”

(A Tribute to Andy Griffith)

Barney Fife was part of an old time show

police

station

humor was part of Andy Griffith’s flow

small-town

humor

played part of how Opie Taylor would grow

limited

landscapes

gave the Andy Griffith show a way to go

laughable

comedy

had a new comedian in Andy woe

pigskin

sportsman

could open the door to a fun elbow

dialogues

similar

to “What it Was,” was done to be hallow

comic

relief

was a start to Andy’s job of shallow

horizons

opened

by Andy Griffith were forever more

pretense

bringing

on laughter was common with Barney’s war

laudable

pleasure

was had by all viewing Andy’s fun score

content

happened

as a matter of life for Andy’s corps

sitcom

satire

was great for Andy and he never swore

humorous

anecdotes

kept coming with Andy, and time would snore

Granny

scolded

Opie for misunderstanding a chore

loving

caring

for each other was common as a boor

handling

matters

was left up to Barney, as he would scour

cruising

along

the main street was Andy, Bee was the flower

passing

moments

seemed a mile away, Andy in power

ticking

movements

wore thin on Bee’s nerves, she could turn sour

policing

stations

caused a panic for Barney, he would cower

genuine

clamor

took over when Barney would shower

charades

avoided

the truth behind Andy’s show as aligned

comedic

overtures

were spread around, till it became defined

theater

drama

did not figure into Andy’s novel mind

clowning

around

was as common as time running behind

Opie

opened

up when Barney and Bee became confined

slapstick

comedy

was realized as Andy was refined

dancing

allowed

an open exchange of what was entwined

funnyman

farces

gave way to humor that was realigned

comedic

hilarity

offered by Andy was special and light

Matlock

lasted

till Andy was no longer able to delight

aging

evaded

Andy Griffith longer than his birthright

playing

acting

as a ham was gone, Andy lost insight

monologues

defined

Andy’s early career, he was the limelight

angling

fishing

for the limelight, Andy found appetite

instilling

freedom

to be your own man was from his foresight

twisting

turning

over the stage to the young was from hindsight.

Laws of Nature

Laws of Nature

The laws of nature supersede those of the land

earthquakes will overpower what man has best planned

man’s laws try to overcome nature to remand

ill conceived ideology adds sleight of hand

social beings need compassion, life to withstand

Yin needs Yang to thrive with harmony, like a band

dogma brings bad karma when nature is not scanned

following ill thought laws, like playing a dead hand

wastes time as nature won’t let us misunderstand

in time nature has its way, we’re like grains of sand!

Highways and Byways

Highways and Byways

Life has many paths, some are easy, others are strange

stretching

over

the landscape we find a life on those which may derange

rising

lowering

with no rhythm making bellies feel a fuller range

moving

beyond

the horizon as the mind creates an exchange

freeways

expressing

a mood of speed is suitable for an interchange

back-roads

having

gravel are dusty for the driver to rearrange

travel

exhausts

the driver if the range is overly counterrange

devil

drivers

speed and cause accidents over a wider downrange

drifting

roadways

can make the stomach queasy though a car is flowing

twisting

turning

roadways are dangerous for all cars, overflowing

country

riding

is fun for traveling on short trips offering growing

grandma

grandpa

driving down the back roads is about fun exploring

taking

vacations

by car is a fun trip, on highways to be soaring

taking

crossroads

to gravel roads is sight seeing without knowing

counting

vehicles

to see how many in color, being outgoing

playing

mental

games to be happy while you are sportingly roaming

singing

happy

songs, rabble rousing as you are traveling along

cruising

along

while singing happily to make you feel better, strong

riding

routines

are not well known, though love is created to belong

laughing

breaks-out

suddenly as the kids are going half way ding-dong

mother

father

are half nuts, someone begins singing a cradle-song

driving

forward

till off road obstacles bring on an awkward torchsong

dipping

arteries

cause the stomach to be upset, as we go headlong

railroad

crossings

cause us to stop, waiting brings us to a singalong

passovers

create

air disturbances to beware, air is an insight

stopping

eating

on the roadway is a treat, and a dining delight

pretending

sleeping

like a hideaway in the backseat, for fun foresight

roleplay

signals

time to fool mom and dad, hiding, create incite

racetrack

watching

is family fun that over time begins to ignite

lounging

backseat

makes you sleepy on the way to sleep, having a good night

dreaming

fantasies

of wonderlands of the subconscious appetite

rem-sleep

wanderings

open new horizons into view, a new nightlight.

Winter Blues

Winter Blues

Time seems to creep in Winter time

things slow down, thoughts turn to the sublime

to Spring, warm Summers in our prime

to love and romance, things that rhyme

as ice and snow blanket the ground

watching kids playing, hearts that pound

sitting, watching the world go round

wanting more and feeling home bound

down in the dumps, all seems a ruse

wanting a new love to infuse

mental anguish comes to confuse

reach out to kick the Winter Blues!
